Did you know that bees are responsible for 1 in 3 forkfuls of the food we eat? Without pollinators, we would live in a very different world; just look at the plot of Bee Movie. Bees and other pollinators are dying off at an alarming rate due to harmful pesticides known as neonicotinoids, which are addictive to bees and draw them away from their hives. As a result, colony collapse occurs and the number of these important pollinators starts to go down. Declining populations have resulted in the bumble bee being officially classified as “endangered” by the U.S.
We need to take action! Connecticut is on the forefront of pollinator protection, having banned neonicotinoids, but we still need to raise awareness about just what is happening to pollinators. Beekeepers reported 40% of their colonies dying off last year. In the spring of 2017, we were able to get UConn a national accreditation that made UConn a Bee Friendly Campus. Right now we are working to get the Town of Mansfield to become a Bee Friendly City.
